(John) Beverley Nichols, 9 September 1898, Bower Ashton, Bristol - 15 September 1983, Kingston, London from complications after a fall

A popular writer best known for his gardening novels and as a writer for Woman's Own
Played the part of Hon. Richard Wells in Glamour, 1931
He lived at Merry Hall in Agates Lane from 1946 to 1956 and following the sale of the house moved into the cottage in it's grounds for a few months. The house was put on the market with Ralph Pay & Taylor for £8,500 and was advertised in Country Life October 25, 1956
He was Vice-President of Ashtead Horticultural Society and opened their Summer show in 1953 and 1954

Beverley Nichols, a well-known and prolific author and contributor for many years to the magazine Woman's Own, was a talented musician and composer and a close friend of many of the theatrical and literary figures of the day. He lived in Ashtead for some ten years from 1946, when he bought the Georgian house Merry Hall in Agates Lane. He wrote several of his books here. One of these, Merry Hall, was dedicated to A.E. Newby, Nichols' gardener who is referred to in the book as 'Oldfield'. This name is preserved in Oldfield Gardens. Nichols' household was run by his manservant Arthur R. Gaskin, known to his friends as 'Reg', from 1924 until his death from cirrhosis in 1966. Gaskin was on particularly friendly terms with Mr Marshall, (known as 'Smiler' and employed by Mr Maples opposite).
